Joaquim is at the end of his working life. He has made a deal with his employer and will retire early after a short period of unemployment. Before that, he still has to prove that he has tried to find work by submitting a few pro forma applications. His tour takes him through rural Portuguese industrial areas and into factories where idleness reigns. In the 1970s, Joaquim had left here to seek his fortune in New York. There he was a cab driver and chauffeur and experienced a lot. Joaquim has style and radiates cosmopolitanism. When he drives around in his Mercedes Elegance - always well coiffed and wearing a strikingly patterned shirt - he reminds one of a US TV series hero from the 1970s. He has been many things in his life: a worker, a migrant, a husband and a friend. How will he cope from now on as a pensioner?
